The dried tangerine peel is called Chenpi in China.

The three treasures of Guangdong Province include Chenpi, old ginger and rice straw. They are common agricultural products seemingly. But there is great use of them, especially Chenpi. Chenpi was described in “Sheng Nong's Herbal Classic (Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing)“ and “Compendium of Materia Medica (Ben Cao Gang Mu) “ for medicinal value.

Chenpi has been aged process the peel of fruit citrus in dry environment for long time. In Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan and Sichuan have grown fruit citrus and production of Chenpi. Recorded in “The Compendium of Materia Medica” that Xinhui Chenpi is the best. Xinhui dried tangerine peel has been originated almost 900 years ago in the middle of the Song Dynasty in ancient China. At that time, Chenpi had become one of the famous specialties in Guangdong.

Xinhui is called Gangzhou in the ancient time, is located at the confluence of  three rivers, a place where fresh and salt water mix. in the south-central Guangdong province.  The soil is fertile, the climate is suitable and the sun is abundant which provides a unique growing environment for tangerine tree.

The tangerine peel are rich in volatile oil, flavonoids and polysaccharides.

The tangerine peels from Chazhigan tree are moderate thickness, full of volatile oils, dense fruity, especially the trees which planted in paddy fields are best. According to legend, the tangerine trees are planted in the paddy fields where in view of Linyun tower, can produce the best Chenpi.. These areas are called core region. Other regions are second.

Since ancient times, it has been said that one gram of Chenpi equals one gram of gold. 100 years old Chenpi is worth more gold. Chenpi can be used as medicine and spice. Chenpi is valuable because it took a long time of drying and aging, to experience its medicinal value and special fragrance.
